Who we are
WHAT IS OFFICE & PROFESSIONAL
EMPLOYEES INTERNATIONAL UNION,
The Office and Professional Employees International Union is a member of the AFL-CIO family of unions and the Canadian Labour Congress. It is a labor union and in that lies its strength. It can call upon other labor organizations for aid and assistance, because that is the tradition of organized labor in the United States and Canada.
Although the OPEIU is one of the youngest unions, it has been on the American scene since 1945 when it was chartered. It was an outgrowth of an organization called the International Council of Office Employees Unions, established in 1942. This Council was made up of a number of local union groups. Since then, more than 300 local unions in the Unites States, Canada, and Puerto Rico have come into being.
Ever since its organization, the OPEIU has concerned itself with the field of office and professional employment. Office and professional employees have unique problems that cannot be solved by other types of unions.
The Office and Professional Employees International Union has scored major and important gains in salary schedules, improved overtime rates, sick leave and vacation arrangements, promotion opportunities, proper job classifications, recognition of seniority and other benefits. You will find all these gains a matter of published record.
The OPEIU is a model of democracy. Its construction is an ironclad guarantee that it will remain a democratic organization. Elections of union officers and executive board members are by secret ballot. Salaries of officers are set by convention action. Financial reports must be filed, disclosing what has been spent right down to the last penny.
